The definition of addiction is a pattern of behavior or activity that continues despite unwanted consequences and causes noticeable dysfunction at home, at work or in leisure time.
Facts
*One out of eight Americans has a serious problem with alcohol or drugs, of which 40 percent have a "dual diagnosis," or co-occurring disorder;
*Approximately 27 million Americans either use illicit drugs regularly or are "heavy drinkers." 16 million of them need immediate intervention;
*Almost 12 percent of adolescents use illegal drugs by age 18;
*Untreated alcoholism increases medical costs by 300 percent;
*Approximately 70 percent of illegal drug users are employed and contribute significantly to workplace absenteeism, accidents and injuries, decreased productivity, increased insurance expenses, employee turnover costs and on-the-job violence;
*We spend 250 billion dollars a year treating the far-reaching effects of chemical dependency;
*Substance abuse, along side other out-of-control behaviors, has become one of the most severe health and social problems facing the United States.
