The research appeared in an issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis conducted by Joseph Green, a co-author and associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University. He and Steven Jay Lynn, of the State University of New York at Binghamton, compiled the results of 59 studies.
Green and Lynn concluded that smokers who underwent hypnosis had better results in terms of abstinence than did smokers who had no intervention. But since other therapies were also of considerable benefit, it was difficult to determine the effect hypnosis alone had on the outcome. Green stated that, "Many times, hypnosis is packaged with other, more comprehensive treatments, [therefore] it's extremely difficult to tease apart and determine which individual therapy got the smoker to quit."
Approaches range from self-help therapy to taking medication, and include nicotine replacement therapies, acupuncture, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Green went on to say, "A smoker who wants to quit should be offered a variety of potentially effective interventions. That way, a person can choose the treatment or treatments that best suit him."
