The Importance of Communication Skills

As a psychotherapist, I can't underestimate the importance of communication skills. Without them we would not be able to tend to our relationships.

We would not be able to prevent hurts and problems from getting worse, or resolve conflicts before they cause irreparable damage. Without effective communication skills we might resist asking others for help, or decline to say "no" when we really need to.

We would not get our opinions taken seriously, or motivate others to do things. Most of all, good communication skills allows a person to interact in a way that creates a feeling of competence and effectiveness, what we psychotherapists refer to as "ego mastery" rather than a sense of helplessness or excessive dependence.

Effective communication skills allow you to stand up for yourself and what you believe in, and to get your needs met.
